Ellen’s father was Patrick Murphy (Pat) of Corragunt. Her mother was Mary Ann McAloon. (Spelling for Mary Ann varies on different documents, e.g., Marianne, MaryAnne but Mary Ann will be used here).
Pat Murphy was born before 1851. He successfully applied for a pension in 1916 using the 1851 census as evidence of his age. The next formal record for Pat Murphy is his marriage to Mary Ann McAloon on 25th November 1886. Mary Ann was 21, at least 15 years younger than Pat.
In the 1901 census his age is reported as 58, and 68 in the 1911 census, so his birthdate is approximately 1843. He appears to have been bedridden for some time before his death on 7th July 1923. His death cert, witnessed by his son John, records “probable paralysis for four years” as the cause of death. His mother was alive at the time of the 1901 census, aged 84 and living with him in Corragunt. To distinguish him from any other Pat Murphy in the area he was known as Pat Murphy of Croghan (the little hill where the house was). Here is a photo of Pat Murphy, Ellen’s father.
Mary Ann McAloon’s birth was registered as 28th April 1865 in the nearby townland of Derrynasell West in Co. Monaghan. She was baptised in Roslea church on 25th April 1865. The McAloon family name is largely concentrated in East Fermanagh and Mary Ann’s family originally came from Eshnaglogh, a sub townland of Corragunt. She died 6th September 1926 in Corragunt.
