Edward's Maternal Great Grandparents

Edward’s Tierney great grandparents were James Tierney and Bridget McTeague of Stramackilroy. They were married in Tydavnet church on 12 February 1829, and records survive for three children – Bridget, Sarah and Edward’s grandfather James. James and Bridget lived in Stramackilroy until their deaths – James in 1875 at the age of 76 and Bridget in 1883, aged 85.

As no record has been to date found to identify Edward’s maternal grandmother’s birth surname, it has not been possible to identify the great grandparents on that side.

Edward's Maternal Grandaunts

Bridget Tierney lived in Stramackilroy until her death in 1909 at the age of 74. She never married.

Sarah Tierney was baptised in Tydavnet on 10th November 1835. She moved to Belfast where she married William Hall in 1861; she was a millworker and William a baker. They had seven children between 1861 and 1881. Three died in childhood and another two in their early twenties, reflecting the poor conditions of working-class families in Belfast at the time. The two remaining children were Elizabeth, who emigrated to the USA, remained single and died in New Jersey in 1933, and Mary, who remained in Belfast and married Bernard Doran. The Dorans lived in the Springfield Road area of Belfast and had six children. One child, Mary, died in infancy. The other children all emigrated to the USA where they married and had families. Details of the extended Doran clan are available on Ancestry. Several DNA connections have been identified.
